EMEND School Outreach to Muslim College, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State on 3rd of June, 2022.

To commemorate this year’s World Environment Day with the theme “ONLY ONE EARTH” and in pursuit of her objective to create sustainable environment consciousness in the minds of young people, Emeraldscape Environmental Development (EMEND)’s School Outreach Team, today Friday, 3rd June, 2022 visited Muslim College, Oke-Ila in Ado-Ekiti to sensitize the students on topics such as; Recycling, Tree planting, Climate Change and proper Waste Management.

Kemi Osadola, the team lead for EMEND School Outreach educated the students on World Environment Day, telling them the annual date is 5th June and the theme for 2022 celebration is “Only One Earth”. She emphasized on the need to realize that there is no planet B elsewhere so we need to protect this planet earth jealously by reducing or stopping activities such as bush burning that leads to depletion of the ozone layer and allows ultraviolet rays on the earth impacting on high intensity of the sun causing what we call harsh weather conditions which in actual fact is climate change, secondly, recycling of used items such as tyres, nylons, clothes among others instead of disposing them indiscriminately.

It was a most engaging time with the students asking and answering questions on causes and effect of climate change, recycling and general environmental issues. To motivate active participation gifts were shared to the students.

One of the highlights of the visit was the launch of EMEND Eco Champion Club with the nomination of two Eco Champions from among the students to push for more green activities in the school. Both students; Adedeji Emmanuel and Ode Janet planted a tree being the symbol of their inauguration as Eco Champions. They were charged with the responsibility of caring and tendering the tree, ensure further eco discussions among other students within the school community.

To ensure we work the talk on recycling, the team sponsored a recycling activity of conversion of old items such as used tyres into valuable and beautiful home/office piece which can serve as seat, leg rest and so on. The materials used include gum, foam and wood. The finished furniture was gifted to the school afterwards to the admiration and appreciation of both teachers and students.

We sincerely appreciate the Ekiti State Ministry of Education for the permission to share green tips in public schools in the state. Our sincere gratitude also goes to the management and staff of Muslim College Ado Ekiti for ensuring the participation of the students. We must commend our highly esteemed volunteers who always show up to achieve our aims and objectives for a healthy and safe environment.

We wish everyone a green, fruitful, sustainable and safe environment in the next year. Happy Environment Day!
