WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2022: UNIBEN WINS #EMENDWEDCOMPETITION
In 1972, the UN General Assembly designated 5 June as World Environment Day (WED). WED is the United Nations’ main machinery for encouraging awareness, call for action and ensure safety of the environment. The inaugural theme “Only One Earth” was celebrated in 1974 in the city of Spokane in the USA. Forty-eight years later the theme is recycled for the 2022 WED celebration. Different educative themes and topics such as air biodiversity, ecosystem restoration, pollutions, plastic pollution, illegal wildlife trade, sustainable consumption, sea-level increase, and food security, among others have been used at one time or the other. Importantly, the trajectory of annual WED themes helps drive change in consumption patterns and in formulation and execution of national and international environmental policies.
The Emeraldscape Environmental Development World Environment Day (EMEND WED) Writing Competition was borne out of the need to align with the 1974 founding principles and intentions especially creating awareness among young people in Nigeria with laser focus on undergraduates in the nation’s higher institutions of learning. This is to is to sensitize our teaming youths on sustainable solutions to global environmental crisis and to compliment the efforts of government and corporate organizations on achieving sustainable, green and healthy environment.
The place of youths in any development plan of action is premium if we must achieve any significant outcome as we deal with global climate crises; food insecurity from unpredictable harsh whether conditions and so on ravaging the world including Nigeria. Towards youth engagement and in compliance with the United Nations SDGs (4) Quality Education and (13) Climate Action
